With a daily need for charging, smartphones and tablets end up causing more USB and Lightning cable mess than old-fashioned rotary dial phones with their curly cords.
Wall power sockets in every room of the house are being taken over with plugs for USB charging cables, meaning you need to disconnect the kettle just to charge with your iPhone or Android. Or you go to plug your charge cable in to a plug and find someone else in the house just started charging their device – leading to a very modern-day ethical dilemma.
The answer could be this product: a wall plate that includes both 3-pin power sockets and USB slots.
There are now a few companies selling such wall plates. We recently reviewed another: the Group Gear USB charging plate.
If one of these looks like it will solve some problems in your house, you can buy one for around £20.
I prefer not to buy electrical equipment from sites such as eBay or even the Amazon Market Place (Amazon direct products should be legit) as you can never be too sure how safe these mostly imports are.


It features an integral moisture protection gasket and angled, in-line terminals, and comes supplied with backed out captive screws for easy installation.

Installation isn’t difficult depending on the placement of the plate and your own ability to wire up electrical equipment.
Turn off your house electricity, double-check power is off, and then remove the existing plate before switching to the new one.
I took pictures of the back of the old one while the wires were still attached in case I had to revert to the old one again.
If your power sockets are all used up with USB plugs this is a great solution.

Ever forget to unplug a charging electronic device? Ever leave a device charging for longer than needed? Of course you have. With the U-Socket, apparently, you don’t have to worry about that or feel guilty when you lose track of the time. Pretty sweet, in my opinion.

And for those of you who care about whether or not a product is made in the China: yep, this one is.

The price of these outlets? $10.

The website says that these are do-it-yourself ready and come with a step-by-step installation manual. I haven’t looked at it in detail and don’t know much about outlet installation, so I’m not going to endorse that. But it seems like another nice benefit if true.

It’s becoming a common problem these days. As we bring more electronic gadgets into our homes, we often find ourselves running out of outlet space to charge them all.
Angie Hicks of Angie's List says it might be time to upgrade to new outlets with built-in USB ports.
“USB outlets are a new trend and they have been available for about a year now," Hicks said. "Electricians expect that they will continue to become more popular."

By adding one or two USB ports right alongside the standard plugs in your electrical outlet, you can plug your devices straight into the wall and eliminate the need for those bulky USB adapters that typically hog valuable outlet space.
If you do decide to make the switch, Angie’s List says it’s a smart idea to pick a few spots in your house for an outlet reboot.
“An electrician typically charges an hourly rate and they can typically install about four USB ports in an hour,” Hicks explained. “Don’t call them out for just one. If you are going to install, then install four.”
You should also expect to pay for the parts which will be about $15 to $30 per outlet.

Look around you. Chances are pretty good there are at least half a dozen things within arm's reach of you that are plugged into a power outlet. Your laptop, your tablet computer, your phone... even that awesome pair of wireless headphones need to be charged. Everything gets plugged in, though some of the smaller devices have charging interfaces that double for data ports.

Your cellphone, for instance, probably recharges over USB.
